Morning Meeting - June '09
The Challenges of Living with HIV/AIDS in Rural Africa
Kate gave a fascinating and fact-filled account of the work at the Kiwoko Hospital and in the surrounding community and of her recent research based there.
Particularly thought-provoking were her comments on what is needed to help people get access to ARVs and to keep to the strict regime necessary when taking them - 20p to cover cost of transport to the clinic, a pen to use for recording treatments on the chart provided, access to reliable time-keeping, e.g. listening to the radio or a battery for a clock.
After coffee the open discussion ranged over a variety of topics, including:
the contrasting attitudes (and success) in South Africa, Uganda, Malawi, ... the importance of openness from government, and church leaders the far-reaching effects of stigmahow regarding HIV/AIDS as a disease linked to sexual activities engenders secrecy the wisdom/efficacy of compulsory testing
With many thanks to Kate for giving such an interesting and moving talk - and to husband Nick for chipping in with medical comments when needed.
